This song is probably still based on my fascination with time to fly
Originally, I’d been knocking about with it in a drop C tuning . I just checked my notes and I can hear myself trying to play it and then I start playing what becomes '2:38' I can hear myself go oh as I realise I can link the two. As side one of the album came together, it was fairly clear the complete side was about peoples mental health and If I wanted to end with 'Lovely Day' which is an optimistic song, I couldn’t play in a drop C as that was a bit too miserable sounding so changed, I think to a Bm.
So the physical sound is a bit more uplifting . The song is written for my friend Arjen. It doesn’t relate to him personally, or specifically it’s just written with him in mind. This sometimes happens when I’m writing, I do have someone in mind or they pop into my head and it isn’t necessarily lyrically relevant to them. I’m just happen to be thinking about them while I’m writing in the song or there must be some very subtle element that allows me to link the song on some strange level to them.
So the album starts with, she said she said
Into 'Wednesday Evening'
And then into 'High'
'2:38' sort of really represents the escapism of 'High' and I wanted to link the two and needed a sound that would represent a fresh start to a new day so regardless of what happened the day before there was an optimism, it’s the start of a fresh new day , you’re going to see your friends, it’s all going to be alright. It’s going to work out.
I was originally going to just steal sort of waves crashing on the beach which would tie in the start of a fresh day from 2:38 to high. It would also also tie it in lyrically with the lyrics of high. I want to lie in the sand and get high , as it was Charles was going on holiday and set up some recording equipment to record the sea coming in which is quite subtle and on the recording you can hear some bloke asking him what he’s doing and then this blokes dog pisses up one of the Mike stands if you look at the book clip with the album, I think there’s a little picture of it.
Charles also recorded the rain on the end of Wednesday evening from his back door it was rattling on a roof .
That concludes side one there was no plan. It’s just how it worked out.
I love the playing on it. The band were absolutely awesome and Damon Sawyer captured these glorious sounds.
And one of the most interesting bits is that usually you record a song after you’ve been playing it for a year or so so it is the finished article you normally record it in its final form but because these songs were worked out and played on the day with literally one or two takes as we’ve attempted to revisit them and look at playing them live. They have started to evolve which is something that’s incredibly fascinating and not something I ever considered. So as we look at them with an attempt to play them live they take on different changes again they start to evolve. They are forever evolving.
Anyway, enjoy
Lovely day
